"To help the individuals and community of Skopelos face the challenge of cancer and other life limiting illnesses through suppoort, advocacy, and education"

We are achieving our mission through four main spheres of activity:

(1) Providing ongoing practical, emotional, social support to patients and their families as well as providing them with information to help them cope with serious illness. Our purpose is to improve patients' quality of life at several levels.

This support is comprised of:

(a)   Psychological and social support. Faros Skopelou strives to give psychosocial and practical support to any patient or relative requesting help. This  is given at the level that each individual or family  requires help. For example in some cases it is a few minutes every week or month talking through concerns about a relative’s symptoms or progress, while in others several hours a week to provide company and a listening ear, or assistance in an outing. Individual or/and family councelling sessions are also provided, if needed.

(b) Advice and practical help. Faros Skopelou aims to give advice on symptom control, end of life care , and on a range of other subjects affecting patients and carers eg information on how to contact specialist agencies and organizations, for example pain clinics and palliative care specialists. This can be in written form (using the library of booklets and fact sheets in the office) or verbally. We have a centre with a range of books, fact sheets and leaflets on cancer and other serious illness, their treatments, and symptom management.

(2) Raising of awareness amongst the island communities of issues surrounding serious illnesses, (eg. their prevention, treatment and how to care for individuals with serious illness), in order to reduce the fear and misconceptions that surround cancer and other serious illness.

We do this through public education events, with talks given by experts on a range of subjects, through leaflet campaigns, and through our website.

(3) Increasing cooperative working with other national charities & organizations to improve patiens' and families' access to specialist services, information and support.

We have established cooperations with national organisations such as Alma Zois (breast cancer support and info), Agkaliazo (cancer support and info), M.A.N.A. (Alzhimer information and care), and Be Strong (an organisation giving accurate info and support to anyone affected by cancer), "Pnoi Agapis"-association for social and emotional support for cancer patients, association of cancer patients of Northern Greece.Have a look at our links page for more information about these organisations and and how to reach them.

(4) Facilitating access for the community's health and social care professionals to education and training in the care of people with serious life-limiting illnesses, with the goal of encouraging sensitive and holistic care.Faros Skopelos is also cooperating with local health professionals concerning the referrals of patients, when needed.

We have sent several members of the island's health and social care to seminars on palliative care that have taken place at St Christopher's hospice in London, at Casa Sperantei hospice in Romania and at "Galilee"-palliative care unit in Athens.
